Who carries out the assessment?

Assessments are delivered by GPhC-registered pharmacists with specialist adult ADHD experience, working within their professional scope. Read our clinician biographies for more about the assessment team.

Independent coaching partners provide optional non-clinical post-assessment support separately from the diagnostic assessment. They do not carry out your clinical assessment.

Who the assessment is designed for

The assessment is for adults aged 18 and over in England or Northern Ireland who are considering whether ADHD may explain difficulties they have experienced over a long period. If you are in Northern Ireland, you can read more about ADHD assessments in Northern Ireland.

People often come to us after noticing patterns that have been present since childhood, or after a family member, colleague or clinician has raised the possibility. Our free initial screening helps you explore whether the symptoms you're experiencing may be consistent with ADHD and whether you may benefit from a full assessment. You can take the free ADHD screener anonymously in about two minutes. If you would like to understand the fee landscape first, our guide to private ADHD assessment costs in the UK sets out what a fee should usually include.

What ADHD is

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by persistent patterns of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that begin in childhood, occur across more than one setting and have a meaningful impact on day-to-day functioning.

ADHD presents differently in different people, and it is frequently under-recognised in adults. Everyday experiences such as occasional procrastination or distraction are extremely common and do not, on their own, indicate ADHD.

Why adults seek an assessment

Adults describe a range of reasons: difficulty sustaining focus on work that matters to them, persistent disorganisation, restlessness, difficulty with emotional regulation, or a sense that they have been working much harder than others to achieve the same result.

An assessment offers a considered clinical view of those experiences, and language to understand them — whether or not ADHD is identified.

Questionnaires before your appointment

Once you've booked, we'll send you a small number of questionnaires to complete before your appointment. These help your clinician understand your experiences in more detail and make the assessment itself as focused and useful as possible.

The consultation

A comprehensive 2-hour remote clinical assessment exploring current difficulties, developmental history, education, work, relationships and daily functioning.

Diagnostic criteria

Your experiences are considered against recognised diagnostic criteria, alongside other possible explanations for your difficulties.

15-minute follow-up appointment

Once your assessment has been reviewed and your report finalised, your clinician discusses your diagnostic outcome, shares your completed report and answers your questions about the next steps.

Written report

A comprehensive written report, normally finalised within 7 days and shared during your follow-up appointment, setting out the clinical findings, the diagnostic outcome and the reasoning behind it.

Recommendations and next steps

Appropriate recommendations for support and next steps, plus the option of two complimentary post-assessment coaching sessions with an independent coaching partner. These are available regardless of your diagnostic outcome and can help you understand your outcome, reflect on what you have learned about yourself and consider practical next steps. Coaching is non-clinical; prescribing and medication treatment are not part of this service.

An assessment is about finding the right explanation, not simply receiving a diagnosis.

Booking an ADHD assessment does not guarantee a diagnosis of ADHD. Whatever the outcome, the clinical findings will be explained clearly and a comprehensive written report will be provided.
